Say NO to Auto

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on my new camera when Jace and I got home from visiting relatives in California. I even had Nolan bring it to the airport. I love it. It’s beautiful. You might even find me petting it here and there. That is, when I’m not taking pictures. One of the first things I did after trying to navigate the manuals and instructional DVDs was check out all of Kristen Duke’s photography tips on The Idea Room. And I loved those tips so much I had to download her e-book, Say NO to Auto.

Kristen simplifies the terminology so much that I’ve been able to quickly put her tips into practice and actually remember what to do when taking pictures!

I love how I can take pictures inside without needing the flash.

It’s also fun playing with focal points blurring backgrounds.

I love that I’m getting comfortable with my camera and switching through settings comes naturally now.

She also helped me understand what my camera is telling me to help my picture turn out better.

I still have a long ways to go, but I feel like Kristen has helped me go through a great growth spurt!

  1. Great job! I just got my first DSLR maybe a week or so after your sweet husband took over your blog. I'll have to check out that site & her e-book. I have been avoiding the auto mode and am fond of no flash but I need to learn more!

  2. Jill, thank you so much for posting a link to these tips! I am an aspiring photographer, and I always love learning new ways to make my pictures better! Thanks a bunch!

  3. The photos look great! What a cute boy you have! I am in the same position you were in a few months ago, wanting a DSLR (or proper camera!) but not really seeing that it will be possible at the moment. It is great to see someone who has worked so hard, and never even complained about money etc. get something they really wanted. You totally deserve it! p.s. I always thought you did have a 'proper' camera!

I appreciate comments so much! I'll do my best to reply to you here in the comments section, especially if there is a question so future readers can see the answer.
