When we rearranged our living room I found myself needing another lamp. I found a lamp base pretty quickly at Goodwill that had the shape and size I was looking for. It was an ugly dark teal green and lacked a shade. But it was only $5, so I figured I’d hold onto it until I found a good shade, and if I found a better lamp, it wouldn’t be a big loss.
I few days later I found this lamp and shade at St. Vinnie’s for $4. The lamp wasn’t big enough for the space and the cord wasn’t in great shape, but the shade was perfect. So I gave the Goodwill lamp a few coats of Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint and left the shade as is for 2 months while I figured out what I wanted to do.
Then, the other day, I remembered a roll of lace trim my MIL got me at a thrift store. It’s not recommended for clothing, so I had just held onto it, not knowing what I’d use it for. But it, some Fabri-Tac (I didn’t want to use hot glue since it would show through the lace), and a little grosgrain ribbon, and I had the perfect shade transformation.
I started by wrapping the lace around the whole shade, one row at a time, but the lace started puckering. Instead, I cut strips the lengths of each section of the shade and glued them down. I was a sticky mess, but it was worth it! The ribbon was added last. I think it would look pretty with some rosettes, but Nolan’s not a fan of that idea. I love how subtly pretty the lace is.
And when the lamp is on the color of the lace almost disappears and you just see the pattern of its details.
I can’t wait until we actually paint this wall so it isn’t just the blah builder’s grade white paint. This is where I plan on doing the frame wall I mentioned in my 12 by 2012 list.
It’s amazing how a finished lamp can really pull a space together!
Thanks for stopping by!
